●●● GILBERT - PINNACLE  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #28- February 27, 2014

By Ryan Bafaloukos, Special to Tribune

For the second straight year, the sixth-seeded Gilbert boys basketball team found itself matched up against No. 3 Pinnacle in the Division I quarterfinals.

And for the second straight year, the Tigers came up short, falling to the Pioneers, 69-57, Thursday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.

Pinnacle will meet Dobson for a third time this season in the early Division I semifinals Friday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.

“We didn’t play well early,” said Gilbert coach Jay Caserio. “There were some baskets around the hoop that we didn’t put in and we missed a lot of free throws.”

The game started with a back-and-forth opening quarter as both teams struggled from the field. Gilbert (21-7) used the big bodies of Truman Moore and Spencer Nicolds to grab an early 8-2 lead. Pinnacle came back to take a 12-10 lead after the first eight minutes.

The teams traded baskets in the second quarter and the Pioneers took a narrow, 29-26 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Pinnacle guard Dorian Pickens took over.

The Stanford-commit scored 14 of his game-high 36 points in the third quarter, and the Pioneers outscored Gilbert 27-16 in the third, breaking the game open.

“We had some uncharacteristic plays,” Caserio said of the third quarter. “We had some turnovers and some bad decisions. Pickens hit some shots and I think the guys panicked a bit.”

Gilbert tried to close the distance in the final quarter, but never got within eight points. The Tigers were led by Nicolds, who scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds. Moore scored 10 points and recorded six rebounds, but the Tigers were 7 of 16 from the free-throw line for the game.

●●● GILBERT - MOUNTAIN POINTE  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #25- February 05, 2014

The Tigers played on the road again on back to back days versus the Mountain Pointe Pride and came out victorious with a 75 to 47 score. The Tigers jumped out to a double digit lead with good ball movement and rebounding. The Pride made a nice comeback towards the end of the first quarter, but when the Tigers brought Anthony Bryant back into the game in the second quarter the Tigers raced out to a 20 point advantage and at the break the score was 30 - 18.

The Tigers ball movement and chemistry was even better in the second half. The first possession of the third quarter Spencer Nicolds found Wyatt Lowell on a nice back door cut for a two handed slam. The Tigers continued to share the ball and also connected on 8 threes for the game. Leading scorer for the Tigers was Spencer Nicolds with 19 points. Also scoring in double figures was Truman Moore's 13 points, including 14 rebounds and Wyatt Lowell's 11 points. For the game 9 Tigers were able to reach the scoring column in the score book.

Up next is the Tigers last home game of the regular season, which means we get to honor our four seniors. This year the varsity will be hosting the Jaguars from Desert Ridge who is a very skilled team with two of the best scorers in the valley. The coaching staff is excited to honor Anthony Bryant, Trevor Spires, Spencer Nicolds and Eric Mosley who are this year's seniors.

●●● GILBERT - SKYLINE  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #23 - January 31, 2014

The Tigers won a home game versus the Skyline Coyotes Friday night on parent night by a score of 74 - 48. The Tigers started fast getting out to a 23 - 9 first quarter lead behind Wyatt Lowell's 8 points. The scoring continued in the second quarter with Nick Agostino connecting on 7 of his game high 14 points. The Tigers entered the locker room with a 41 - 18 lead.

The third quarter showed much of the same for the Tigers as they scored 25 points in the quarter. The chemistry, ball movement and willingness to find their teammates was fun to watch. On many possessions a Tiger could of taken it upon himself to get a shot, but elected to make the extra pass to their teammate for a better look. All 12 Tigers in the scorebook were able to get in the scoring column too, which was neat to see. Beside Agostino's 14 points, others who scored double figures were Wyatt Lowell's 13 points, Spencer Nicolds' 11 points and Chris Bowling's 10 points. Wyatt also ripped down 12 rebounds on the night to record a double-double.

●●● GILBERT - BASHA  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #21 - January 28, 2014

The Tigers took on the Basha Bears Tuesday night on the road and came away with a 77 - 64 victory. Basha, coached by Mike Grothaus, who won a state championship as a senior at Gilbert, play extremely hard and as young as they are have a very bright future.

The game started well for the Tigers as they were able to get stops defensively and get out in transition for open shots. When the Tigers couldn't score in transition they really moved the ball well as a team. Early in the game the Tigers found Truman Moore and many nice post entries for high percentage buckets. Truman is starting to get a good feel for holding off his defender for lead passes and if the defense over plays to seal for high low looks. As Basha started to focus on taking away Truman the Tigers moved the ball well opposite of Truman for open threes, which the Tigers made 8 on the night, and getting their defender in close out situations with drives to the basket, specifically Spencer Nicolds. At the break the Tigers lead 39 - 23.

In the second half the Tigers got their lead to 20 points, but Basha never let up and actually turned up the defensive pressure and started to cause turnovers and making Gilbert play pretty sloppy. Numerous turnovers by Gilbert, some forced and some unforced, foul trouble by Basha being aggressive on offense and indecisiveness and poor FT shooting allowed Basha to cut the lead down to 10 points. Basha's Nate Markovich was brilliant all night and led the scoring honors with 30 points. Gilbert finally made some nice plays on both sides of the ball down the stretch to hold their lead. Truman Moore led the Tigers with 20 points and 11 rebounds and notched his second straight double-double. Also scoring in double figures was Trevor Spires with 13 points, Nick Agostino with 12 points and Spencer Nicolds with 10 points. Wyatt Lowell rebounded very very well too with 10 boards and was one bucket away from a double-double too.

●●● GILBERT - CHANDLER  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #20 - January 24, 2014
The Tigers got back in the winning column Friday night with a victory over the Chandler Wolves by a score of 73 - 58. The Tigers, as of late, have not been moving and sharing the basketball like it takes to be a very good team. The Tigers have been concentrating on that part of the game to get better and Friday night's game showed how it can affect a game.

The Tigers shared the ball better then they have all year which created very good shots all night. The first quarter was a little bit of a struggle, but the Tigers really turned it on in the second quarter out-scoring the Wolves 25-9. On offense the Tigers had a very good balance of getting post and perimeter touches and keeping Chandler's defense guessing throughout the game. On defense the Tigers did a pretty good job. Even though Chandler's scoring duo of Marco Morales and Bryce Perkins basically hit their season averages, their points didn't come easy.

Truman Moore led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was Anthony Bryant and Nick Agostino each scoring 12 points apiece.

Up next for the Tigers is another 3 game week started with a road game versus a young and well coached Basha Bears team on Tuesday night.

●●● GILBERT - HIGHLAND  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #19- January 22, 2014

The Tigers dropped a tough road game at Highland Wednesday night in overtime by a score of 67 - 60. The Hawks led and controlled the entire game right from the tip. The Tigers got the benefit of some mistakes by Highland late in the game being down 8 points to get the game tied and sent to overtime. Sophomore Chris Bowling hit a deep three with 21 seconds left to knot the game at 55 all. The Tigers last possession defense was very good forcing a pretty difficult shot that rimmed out.

The struggle to score throughout the game continued in the overtime, credit to Highland's defense, but also Gilbert's lack of sharing the basketball. The Hawks outscored Gilbert 12-5 in the OT. Gilbert did a pretty good job limiting Jake Toolson who is one of the state's leading scorers as he scored 19 points on the night and only shooting 3 FTs. The difference in the game was Austin Witherill who made big shot after big shot. He hit deep threes, back door layups, pull up jumpers and shots off dribble hand-offs. He led all scorers with 22 points.

●●● GILBERT - NORTH  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #18 - January 21, 2014

The Tigers earned a road victory Tuesday night over the North Mustangs by a score of 59 - 48. Coach Bustos, who has coached at North for many years winning two state championships does a great job putting his team in a position to win each and every night. The Mustangs used a matchup zone to negate the Tigers size and force them into shooting perimeter jump shots. The Mustangs also rebound and play very hard to make up for their lack of size.

The Tigers did a fairly good job getting the ball inside in the early stages of the game, but allowed a few Mustangs to get loose for five three pointers in the first half because of lazy floor position on defense. Spencer Nicolds' thunderous dunk as time ran out in the second quarter gave the Tigers a two point advantage at the break. The Tigers did a much better job defensively in the second half allowing no threes and were also able to create some turnovers in third quarter to outscore the Mustangs 16 - 8 and give themselves a 10 point cushion going into the final stanza. The Tigers did just enough in the 4th quarter to hold off North. It was a little disappointing to see some sloppy turnovers and missed free throws down the stretch while North was using a half court trap in which the Tigers should of been able to get pretty easy layups.

The Tigers had four guys in double figures led by Wyatt Lowell and Truman Moore each scoring 11 points followed by Spencer Nicolds and Anthony Bryant each scoring 10 points.

●●● GILBERT - CORONA DEL SOL  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #17 - January 17, 2014
By Richard Obert azcentral sports

The two-time defending Division I champions showed once again since coming off the break that there may be no challengers ready to hang with the No. 1-ranked team after holding visiting Gilbert to 15 first-half points in a 68-39 Section II rout before an overflow crowd.

Friday, it was 6-9 senior center Connor MacDougall asserting his power against 6-9 Truman Moore and No. 4 Gilbert (13-4, 3-1). In the first half, MacDougall scored one more point than Gilbert had as a team in the half.

“Our main focus was defense tonight, and we figured if we could get stops, it would give us a good chance to win,” said Oregon-bound senior guard Casey Benson, who had seven of his team’s 39 first-half points. “Connor played really well tonight. It was a team effort. We had a bunch of guys who stepped up and played really well.”

Even the bench players, led by Cassius Peat and freshman guard Alex Barcello.

Peat provides toughness on defense, and Barcello, a strong ballhandler who can penetrate, nailed a 3-pointer late in the third quarter that got the 30-point, keep-a-running-clock rule in effect.

The key was the way MacDougall started the game, controlling the boards, and providing a physicality that Gilbert hasn’t seen.

“He set the tone early, and our other guys fed off of him,” Duane said.

Gilbert went with a zone with man coverage inside on MacDougall But MacDougall  was stronger and quicker, and was able to power his way to the rim for either baskets or getting put on the free-throw line because he was fouled.

●●● GILBERT - MESQUITE  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #16 - January 15, 2013

The Tigers hosted the Mesquite Wildcats on Wednesday night and came out victorious with a 69 - 53 score. It was evident at the start of the game what Mesquite's game plan was. With the loss of 3 starters due to injury, Coach Cooper trying to put his kids in the best situation possible, played out long possessions on offense and packed in a zone on defense. The Tigers were a little restless on defense in the first half and over pressured the ball leading to some layups and three point play opportunities. The Tigers tried to use a press to speed up the game that seemed to work on every other possession.

On offense the Tigers worked the ball to get good shots, but unfortunately they just weren't effective enough to get the ball to the correct spots against their zone. With that said the Tigers took an 8 point lead going into half by a buzzer beating three ball from Nick Agostino. The Tigers did make a couple of simple adjustments defensively at half and on offense the Tiger's shooting heated up. Eventually starting the 4th quarter the Tigers up by a dozen went to a spread offense to make Mesquite come out of their zone. When they did the Tigers were able to execute pretty well.

Wyatt Lowell led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding with 17 points and 7 rebounds with no turnovers. Also scoring in double figures was Nick Agostino's 10 points and he also led the team with 6 assists. Prayers go out to Cole Carlson who injured his knee in the second half. Cole really played well, being very active on defense and he also shot the ball with confidence, scoring 8 points on 3 shots. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

Up next for the Tigers is a road match-up against two time defending state champs of Corona. The Aztecs return a very talented team again with 4 year starting point guard in Casey Benson and two highly touted transfers in Connor McDougal and Dane Kuiper. The Tigers are excited for the test, especially at Corona as their student body support makes for a great environment. Hope our student body travels well.

●●● GILBERT - CENTRAL  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #15 - January 10, 2014

The Tigers capped off a good week with a win over the Central Bobcats at home Friday night by a score of 53 - 41. The Tigers defense and rebounding allowed them to overcome a night where their offense was out of sync. The Tigers only allowed 15 points in the first half and for the game they had a 45 - 22 rebounding advantage.

The player of the game for the Tigers was Spencer Nicolds as he had a game high 13 points and 12 rebounds. Spencer was active all night on both sides of the ball hitting a three, getting to the line and scoring off the dribble. He also regularly went up high amongst some very athletic Central Bobcats to grab numerous rebounds to start the Tiger's break. Also scoring double figures for the Tigers was Anthony Bryant with 10 points.

The Tigers are off until Wednesday as they take on the Mesquite Wildcats at home. Hope to see The Jungle rockin' as there has not been too many fans at the last few games for the hard working Tigers.

●●● GILBERT - HAMILTON  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #14 - January 09, 2014

The Tigers traveled to Hamilton Thursday night to take on a well coached Huskies team that had only one loss on the season. The Huskies, coach by Kevin Hartwig, are always a difficult team to beat as they play very good defense and they make minimal errors.

The Tigers controlled most of the game from the jump and had to battle foul problems in the first half with Eric Mosley, Spencer Nicolds and Truman Moore all picking up two fouls which sent them to the bench for the rest of the half. Holding on to a slim lead Anthony Bryant's buzzer beater at the end of the 2nd quarter lifted the Tigers into the locker room with a 25 - 21 lead.

In the second half the Tigers were able to claw to a lead as large as 8 points, but Hamilton was able to execute at key stretches to prevent the Tigers from pulling away. Again at the end of the 3rd quarter the Tigers lead by 4 points and Anthony Bryant knocked down another buzzer beating floater. The Tigers held that slim lead throughout the fourth quarter, but some missed free throws allowed the Huskies to get a last second desperation three to tie. With the ball being inbounded underneath the basket with 4 seconds left the Huskies threw a pass out to the top of the key to Deonte Harrington. Deonte caught and had to shot fake as Wyatt Lowell covered him and then launched a shot that dropped at the buzzer sending the game into OT.

The Tigers never wavered and even going down by four points to start OT, Anthony Bryant came back and hit a floater and the following possession Eric Mosley found Chris Bowling for a three to take the lead that the Tigers never relinquished again. Anthony Bryant led all scorers with 16 points, while Wyatt Lowell and Truman Moore also scored double figures by scoring 13 and 11 points respectively.

The Tigers are right back at it again tonight as they take on the Bobcats from Central in the The Jungle at 7 pm. Central is one of the more athletic teams in the state and are having a nice season of their own with a record of 11-4.

●●● GILBERT - MESA  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #13 - January 07, 2014
By Les Willsey - aia365.com

Gilbert High's battle plan to defeat Mesa High on Tuesday night worked out close to perfect. Mostly via Gilbert's execution and some help and misfortune for Mesa.

A 9-0 run late in the second period sent Gilbert to intermission with a 14-point lead and the Tigers had their way from there in a 58-41 boys basketball triumph at The Jungle.

Gilbert (10-3, 5-0 power-ranking games) shot well in the first half, which boosts any game plan. Gilbert connected on 50 percent of its shots from the field in the first 16 minutes (13-of-26) and sank four threes. Limiting Mesa (11-6, 6-2 prg) to 1-of-10 shooting from the floor in the second period was another plus as were the Xs and Os drawn up prior to the contest by the Tigers' coaching staff.

"Our goal was to limit (Mesa guard Christian) Harris from getting threes and keeping them from speeding us up," Gilbert coach Jay Caserio said. "If we could do that and do a good job containing (Isaac) Allen and (Felipe) Velazco on the boards we felt we had a good chance."

Harris had one of his tougher nights of the season. The 6-foot, senior guard was held scoreless in the first half and didn't dent the scoreboard until four minutes remained in the third period (a three). Harris made one more basket in the quarter. He finished with five points on 2-of-11 shooting.

Drawing the defensive assignment on Harris was Gilbert senior point guard Anthony Bryant. Bryant's defense was stellar and he enjoyed top scoring honors for the game. Bryant was the only player on either team to score in double figures, finishing with 14 points. Bryant scored off his own steals, those from teammates, some via offensive boards and in the third period by nailing a couple 15-foot jumpers.

As for Mesa's 6-10 Allen, he picked up two quick fouls at the 6:28 mark of the first period -- one a personal foul the next a technical. He sat the rest of the quarter as Gilbert built a 17-11 lead. Allen was never really a factor, finishing with five points. Harris and Allen average about 24 points a game between them.

Caserio was also concerned with Mesa guard Kale Abbott, who helps the Jackrabbits force the action in half court. Abbott, however, went down with bruised left knee midway through the second period and didn't return. Velazco, a 6-6 senior and solid contributor to the program the past three years for coach Shane Burcar, seemed the most active Jackrabbit in this one. Velazco led Mesa with eight points. Six came in the opening half. Gilbert led by 19 after three quarters and by as much as 24 in the final stanza.

"We didn't do well in our last game with Jefferson (at VisitMesa.com)," Caserio said. "They speeded us up and we had 24 turnovers. We limited those tonight and even the ones we had were out of bounds giving us a chance to set up defensively."

Gilbert had nine players score. Helping Bryant out offensively were fellow starters Eric Mosley (nine points), Truman Moore (eight) and Wyatt Lowell (six) -- two first-half threes.

●●● GILBERT - HOUSTON CHRISTIAN  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #9 - December 27, 2013

Gilbert High has a boys basketball team that needs to be paid some attention. The Tigers keep proving that.

The latest evidence was Friday morning's 89-70 victory over Houston Christian at the Visitmesa.com tourney at Mesa Mountain View High.

Gilbert ran its record to 8-1, opening the contest with a 15-5 run and closing the first half with a 9-0 run that gave the Tigers a healthy 53-31 advantage after 16 minutes. Gilbert coach Jay Caserio continues to be pleased with his team's make-up, effort and development of depth which contributed to the lopsided triumph.

"This is the first team I've had with a lot of size," Caserio said. "We're getting scoring from a lot of guys. I think we're close to having five guys average in double figures. Everyone understands that and they're willing to share the ball. We're a pretty solid group."

Senior point guard Anthony Bryant displayed a well-round game with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Bryant did all his damage via penetration and transition. He scored 13 of his 15 points in the opening half on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.

The 5-foot-11 Bryant is part of a starting lineup that goes 6-9 (Wyatt Lowell), 6-8 (Truman Moore) 6-7 (Spencer Nicolds) and 6-4 (Eric Mosley). Lowell connected for 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, helping the Tigers to a 44-29 rebounding edge. Nicolds led in scoring with 17 points, 11 in the first half from he and Lowell. Moore finished with eight points and Mosley had six.

Gilbert's bench pitched in nicely with 14 points in the first half from Chris Bowling, Nick Agostino, Trevor Spires and Cole Carlson. Bowling joined Bryant, Nicolds and Lowell with double-digit scoring, hitting for 10.

Among Gilbert's victories to date are Desert Mountain, Highland, Chaparral and Red Mountain. All sport winning records. It's lone loss was to Shadow Mountain, a game the Tigers played without Moore and lost by eight. Gilbert's next game in the tournament is Saturday (Dec. 28) at 7 p.m. vs. St. John Bosco.

●●● GILBERT - CHAPARRAL  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #8 - December 14, 2013

On the final day of the inaugural Hoop Hall West tournament the Tigers were able to play well enough to beat the Chaparral Firebirds in the 3rd place game at Grand Canyon University. It was a sluggish first half for both teams as baskets were hard to come by and the Tigers held a slight three point advantage at the half.

The Tigers were a much different team in the second half as the Tigers got the ball in the post regularly, cut to the hoop from the weak side for baskets and got 9 offensive rebounds in the second half as opposed to only 1 in the first half. The Tigers game plan was to own the paint on the offensive side of the ball and defensively try to make Chaparral take contested jump shots. The coaching staff thought the Tigers executed the game plan pretty well and seeing the Tigers went 23 - 26 from the FT line compared to 6 - 11 for the Firebirds was great evidence of dominating the paint. Truman Moore is starting to feel more and more comfortable after missing two weeks at the beginning of the year with a wrist injury. His play is opening up opportunities for the rest of the Tigers. Truman led the Tigers with 16 points and Anthony Bryant also scored in double figures with 12 points.

●●● GILBERT - RED MOUNTAIN  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #7 - December 12, 2013

The Tigers earned a home victory last night versus the Red Mountain Mountain Lions by a score of 57 - 50. For the first time this season the Tigers started the game and the entire first half efficiently on both sides of the ball. It was evident right away that Red Mountain's game plan was to pack in the defense and make the Tigers beat them from outside. The Tigers did a good job of getting the ball inside, specifically to Truman Moore and he finished around the rim and when he was double-teamed he regularly found his teammates slashing to the paint for easy buckets. Truman had a game high 5 assists on the night and Eric Mosley kept the defense guessing with three from downtown in the first half. The Tigers looked to have a nice comfortable 17 point lead at the break, but the Lions' senior PG, Colton Plourd, drained a tough pull-up three at the buzzer to cut the lead to 14 points and get some momentum heading into the locker-room.

As nice as it was to see how the Tigers played in the first half it was equally disappointing to see how they played in the second half. Red Mountain played tougher then the Tigers for the remainder of the game and even though the shots that weren't dropping for the Tigers were actually pretty good looks, it was disappointing to see Gilbert settle for jumpers and not to continue to punish Red Mt. with getting the ball into the post like the first half. The Tiger's defense and rebounding allowed them to hold on down the stretch, but in the future Gilbert is going to have to learn how to put teams away rather then letting them hang around throughout the 4th quarter. Leading scorers were Anthony Bryant's 19, Truman Moore's 13 and Wyatt Lowell's 12 points. Red Mountain was led by Kapono Enos and Colton Plourd with 12 points each.

●●● GILBERT - GILBERT CHRISTIAN  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #6 - December 10, 2013

The Tigers earned a hard fought road victory over the defending Division III state champs of the Gilbert Christian Knights Tuesday night by a score of 73 - 62. For the second straight game the Tigers started off the game sloppy with careless turnovers and bad fouls leading to easy baskets and points for the Knights. On the offensive end the Tigers did a nice job at the beginning of the game getting the ball to Truman Moore for easy baskets around the hoop and two timely threes by Spencer Nicolds and Wyatt Lowell allowed the Tigers to hold a slight 1 point advantage after the first quarter.

The Tigers clamped down better in the second quarter with the help of taking care of the ball, defensive rebounding and getting out in transition. If it wasn't for Gilbert Christian's sharp shooter, Sam Jones, the Tigers could of really pulled away. Every time the Knights needed a big bucket, Sam Jones seemed to knock down the shot. He made, threes, free-throws, pull-up jumpers, guarded and unguarded. It's no surprise why Ivy League school Penn offered Sam to play basketball for them.

The key for the game was Spencer Nicolds. Spencer might have played his best basketball game in a Tiger uniform. Even though Sam Jones did score 20 points, when we switched Spencer on to him it was much more difficult for him to get buckets. Even when he hit tough shots, Spencer never flinched and continued to play. Spencer was also the leading scorer in the game with 23 points. Spencer hit a three, pull-up jumpers, a runner and got to the line 13 times. Also scoring in double figures for the Tigers was Anthony Bryant with 14 points, and both Truman Moore and Wyatt Lowell with 12 points each.

●●● GILBERT - HIGHLAND  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #5 - December 06, 2013

Anytime, any year the Gilbert Tigers and the Highland Hawks play each other in any sport, especially in basketball you can always expect an exciting atmosphere and game. Friday night in The Jungle was just that. With both schools' student body representing in full force the Tigers were able to get a great come from behind victory over the Hawks by the score of 72 - 66. The Goons led by our own Tiger, Navey Baker, gave our varsity team that extra boost to make it happen.

In the first half both teams seemed to trade baskets back and forth with Gilbert's mainly coming from inside the arc and Highland's were from long distance. In fact Highland shot it well all night connecting on 11 threes. Gilbert's Anthony Bryant kept the Tigers in the game in the first half with 14 of his 22 points. At the half the score was all knotted up at 37 all.

The Tigers made a couple of adjustments at the half, but that didn't slow down the Hawks as they ripped off another 19 points in the quarter and if it wasn't for Anthony's 3 ball at the end of the quarter the Tigers would of been down by 8 points. With the quarter ending three the Tigers seemed to gain a little momentum, but Highland came out with 5 straight points and the Tigers found themselves in a deep deep hole down double digits. Just when you thought Highland was going to run away with this contest the Tigers showed the toughness they have and truly played like Tigers down the stretch. Down ten in the early stages of the final stanza the Tigers went on an 18 - 0 run, which was fueled by the Tiger's zone press, scrambling defense and beautiful sharing of the basketball. In fact six different Tigers scored, including the team going 13 for 15 from the line just in the 4th quarter and 20 for 15 for the game.

The Tigers used a balanced scoring attack with 4 players in double figures with Anthony leading the way with 22, followed by Truman Moore's 14, Wyatt Lowell's 12 and Eric Mosley's 11 points. The program was pleased with the their second straight sweep as both the freshmen and JV squads earned hard fought victories. The coaching staff was pleased with the GOON section and how classy they were all night long. Next game for the Tigers is a game against Division III defending state champs of Gilbert Christian on the road Tuesday night. GC moved up a division this year and have a very skilled team led by Sam Jones and Roberto Reyes.

●●● GILBERT - QUEEN CREEK  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #4 - December 03, 2013

The Tigers opened up power point play Tuesday night in "The Jungle" with a non-conference win over Queen Creek by a score of 63 to 54. The Bulldogs, coached by Troy Gibson, came in with a great game plan by playing a match-up zone to take away the Tiger's size and throughout most of the game used a 5 guard line-up to cause defensive problems for the Tigers.

The Tigers defense was pretty good in the first half, but it was a rough go as offensively we were not on the same page, which led to indecision. The Tigers got a last possession defensive stop and Spencer Nicolds' half court three pointer that banked in was ruled no good as it left his hand a split second after the horn. The Tigers entered the locker room down 1 point by a score of 23 - 22.

The coaching staff made a couple of good adjustments at the half and immediately came out and went on a 10 - 2 run to make QC call a timeout. The Bulldogs made their own run back at the Tigers with a flurry of threes, mainly by Parker Anderson (22 points), as he hit 5 in the game to keep them within striking distance. The Tigers were able to go on another run in the 4th quarter, which was capped off by a thunderous tip dunk by Spencer Nicolds, who tallied 8 points in the game. Leading the Tigers in scoring was Wyatt Lowell scoring 23 points and a variety of shots and the ever steady Anthony Bryant with 17 points, including 5 for 6 from the FT line. Not only did Anthony do his part scoring for the Tigers he held Queen Creek's leading scorer, Carter Wilson to 2 points on the night. Not once, throughout the game, did Anthony look frazzled on the court. Just what the coaching staff expects and likes to see from our starting point guard.

●●● GILBERT - DESERT MOUNTAIN  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #3 - November 29, 2013

The Tigers were able to get back in the winning column Friday night with a 62 - 56 victory over the host school, the Desert Mountain Wolves. The coaching staff could tell right from the jump ball that the Tigers were ready to play and the difference between the last two games was glaring.

Defensively, Anthony Bryant was assigned to the lightning quick Rolando Rhymes and even though he had 18 points they came on numerous shots and Anthony and Nick Agostino made it difficult on him the entire night. The Wolves' other stud Will Goff got the defensive assignment of Eric Mosley and Eric did not disappoint. Eric beat him to spots all night, forced numerous turnovers and limited him to 6 points on the night. Desert Mountain's post player Higgins played a great game scoring 20 points, including 4 timely threes. Offensively fort the Tigers Anthony Bryant led with 15 points and 5 assists and Wyatt Lowell with 14 points. Wyatt and Spencer Nicolds also set the tone early by grabbing almost every rebound in the early parts of the game.

The Tigers, for the most part, defended well without fouling, which has been a problem in the early part of the season. Another problem has been turnovers and even though the Tigers still had 16, that is lower then it has been and pretty good against a Desert Mt. team that wants to play a high tempo game using full court pressure.

To finish off the Hoop Hall West tournament it looks like the Tigers will matchup with a very talented Chaparral team in two weeks at Grand Canyon University. Chaparral played a tough game versus Corona del Sol and lost by 4 points at their pool site Friday night. Times yet to be determined. More importantly the Tigers start off their power-point games this Tuesday with their first home game of the year versus a very talented Queen Creek team coached by Troy Gibson. The Tigers would really love to see THE JUNGLE rocking by our GOONS led by Navey Baker!!

●●● GILBERT - SHADOW MOUNTAIN  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #2 - November 27, 2013

The Gilbert Tigers dropped their first game of the year to a talented Shadow Mountain team by a score of 64 - 56. The Tigers started out the game executing their offense pretty well, but when Shadow Mountain switched their defense it caused the Tigers to stall, question and over think their decision making. That with the unusual amount of personal fouls called on both sides were made for an ugly game. Unfortunately the Tigers were not aggressive like the Matadors to take advantage of the double bonus.

The Tigers were down 9 at the break and as many as 16 points into the third quarter, but finally you could see the Tigers understand how to execute and the tides turned. Chris Bowling with a big steal at the end of the third quarter with an assist to Anthony Bryant who hit a big three to close out the quarter and make it an 8 point game. The Tigers were able to tie up the game with three minutes left, but like many teams who make a comeback, ran out of gas down the stretch, especially when having 4 players foul out of the game.

Despite the loss, the coaching staff was pleased to see the Tigers claw back and get the game tied and work together to try to execute what the Tigers were trying to accomplish at the beginning of the game when Shadow Mt. changed their defensive schemes. On a horrible shooting night both from the field and the charity stripe, 21 turnovers and foul trouble, it was quite amazing that we were able to get the gamed tied down the stretch. Also, Eric Mosley, for the second night in a row, notched another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. It is a pleasure watching this senior play his butt off after missing the last 6 weeks of last year with a broken elbow.

To finish off pool play the Tigers take on host Desert Mountain Wolves who completely dismantled the Millennium Tigers, a team the Tigers struggled with throughout most of the second half of their first game. The Tigers better be ready to defend a great point in Rolando Rhymes, a stud wing in Goff and an overall excellent shooting team. The game will be at 6 PM.

●●● GILBERT - MILLENNIUM  ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
Game #1 - November 26, 2013

The Gilbert Tigers opened up the 2013-2014 season with a victory over Millennium in the inaugural Hoop Hall tournament by a score of 62 - 51 at Desert Mountain. The Tigers in the first half defensively did a fairly good job of forcing Millennium into difficult shots and for the most part Gilbert was able to secure the rebound and start their fast break. The Tigers sputtered offensively in the second quarter when 3 year starting point guard, Anthony Bryant, went to the bench with his second foul.

Even though the Tigers were able to stretch their lead to 18 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, the coaching staff was very disappointed with the effort and defensive focus throughout the second half. Millennium was able to drive to the basket for buckets, catch it with ease on the post and run simple side pick and roll for easy baskets. At one point Millennium went on an 11 - 0 run to cut the score to 9 points.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Anthony Bryant's 17 points, Spencer Nicolds' 14 points by not missing a shot in the game and Eric Mosley's 12 points. Eric Mosley also notched a double-double by ripping down 10 rebounds. Gilbert will be visitors to the Shadow Mountain Matadors tonight at 6 PM at Desert Mountain. The Matadors knocked off Desert Mountain on their home court in a thrilling second game by a score of 82 - 81 and were led by Mike Bibby Jr.'s 30 points.
